Latin America has hundreds of great places worth visiting, but unless you live there or are lucky enough to have unlimited vacation time, you probably aren’t going to get to see all of them. That is why we’ve created this handy list of the top 3 best places to visit in Latin America. Once you’ve seen these, you’ll know that you’ve seen a slice of the best this area has to offer.

  1. Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is the pearl of Peru-a truly glistening gem perched on an isolated mountain top. This is one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, and it definitely a must see during any Latin America travel adventure. The best thing about visiting Machu Picchu is that you’ll get to see Cusco and the Sacred Valley in the same trip, since they are all located in the same region and easy to visit. This is ideal because all three locations hold amazing Inca ruins and traditional villages where people still speak Quechua, the language of the Incas. You can choose to do the popular 2 or 4 day trek to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, or do a day visit from the town of Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu.
  2. The Galapagos. This series of islands off the Ecuador is a world-class destination. This is the place to go if you’re an animal lover or interested in nature, as you’ll find creatures here that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Blue footed boobies, massive tortoises and iguana, and all kinds of sea life await your visit. You’ll get to see these animals up close because many of them are not afraid of people, just remember that you’re in a protected area and to give the animals and plant life the respect they deserve. The best way to see the Galapagos Islands is via a cruise. This can be expensive, so start saving your pennies now!
  3. Patagonia. Patagonia is the southernmost region of Argentina and Chile. It is a magnificent landscape of ice, mountains, and fields. This is a great area to go trekking, climbing, skiing, or to take a cruise all the way down to Antarctica-the only limits are those you put on yourself. The weather can be harsh here in the winter, so plan you visit accordingly. Even if you’re not the type who finds camping in the snow appealing, a day hike is highly recommended, so you can appreciate the sparkling glaciers and startling mountain top peaks.
